TETRA Digital Radio Standards

TETRA is an open standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The main purpose of the TETRA standard was to define a series of open interfaces, as well as services and facilities, in sufficient detail to enable independent manufacturers to develop infrastructure and terminal products that would fully interoperate with each other as well as meet the needs of traditional PMR user organisations.

Mission Critical Broadband

The aim of the TCCA Critical Communications Broadband Group (CCBG) is to enable all mission critical and business critical users to access their information systems, intranet and internet at broadband speeds using their professional mobile devices wherever they are and whenever they have the need. This broadband capability should meet the specific needs of the user in the same way that critical voice and narrowband data services are currently delivered by technologies such as TETRA, Tetrapol, P25 and others.

As a market partner of the 3GPP and ETSI global standardisation organisations the TCCA/CCBG have a strong influence on the direction of the industry in the development and implementation of mission critical Broadband and is a catalyst in the evolution of this technology towards becoming a true global open standard for mission critical communications.

TETRA digital trunked mobile radio for voice and data has found acceptance internationsally. It’s success has been mainly due to compliance to an open standard of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

Further, the ETSI TETRA standard received significant input from the various manufacturers and prospective users by way of the TETRA Memorandum of Understanding Association. This international bodybody known as the TETRA and Critical Communication Association (TCCA) has been primarily responsible for the fast tracking of the ETSI TETRA open standard and air interface compatibility compliance testing between subscribing manufacturers. It is interesting to note that the evolution of the ETSI TETRA open standard has outpaced attempts by several organisations to acheive an open standard for digital trunked radio.
